You spray at nine in the morning. By eleven you cannot smell anything. This is not your nose adjusting, and it is not always a bad bottle. Indian conditions are genuinely hostile to fragrance, and most people are using a product designed for a different climate.

Heat speeds up evaporation

Fragrance works by evaporating off warm skin in stages. At 38°C that process runs far faster than at 18°C. Citrus and light aromatic top notes, which are volatile by design, can burn off in under twenty minutes outdoors. What you are left with is the heart and base, and if the base is thin there is nothing left to hold on to.

Humidity kills projection

Damp air saturates the space around you, which limits how far scent molecules travel before dispersing. In coastal cities this is why a fragrance can smell strong on the wrist and invisible to anyone a metre away.

• Eau de Parfum concentration or higher, ideally 15 to 20 percent fragrance oil.
• Woody and resinous bases: cedarwood, patchouli, vetiver, amber, oud accords.
• Balsamic and fixative notes like copaiba, tonka and labdanum that slow evaporation.
• Application to moisturised skin — dry skin sheds fragrance quickly.

Application changes more than you think

Spray after a shower while skin is still slightly warm and hydrated. Target pulse points where blood flow keeps the skin warm. Do not rub your wrists together — friction and heat crush the top notes. And do not spray over deodorant with a competing fragrance.
